Jonathan Feldstein is the founder of Bennu.ai, an Edinburgh based start-up developing smart waste solutions using AI & robotics. In parallel, Jonathan is finishing a PhD in AI at the University of Edinburgh. He has studied and done research at ETH Zürich and Caltech, where his focus was on quantum transistors before pivoting to robotics.

Her research focuses on automatically proving code is correct (verification) and synthesizing correct code (program synthesis). Ever wondered what might happen if an emotional musical automaton googled itself every 15 seconds? What about what happens to its inventors when its fame outweighs theirs? Even if you have not, this talk is for you!

Cybraphon: what an emotional, social-media obsessed, musical automaton can tell us about being human by Simon Kirby.

Simon Kirby is a Professor of Language Evolution at the University of Edinburgh and elected Fellow of the British Academy, Royal Society of Edinburgh, Cognitive Science Society, and a member of the Academy of Europe.

He works in parallel on scientific and artistic investigations of cultural evolution and the origins of human uniqueness, particularly the evolution of language. He founded the Centre for Language Evolution, which has pioneered techniques for growing languages in the experiment lab and exploring language evolution using computer simulations.

♦️Aisha Bokhari: Hello! I'm Aisha, Head of Curation of TEDxUniversityofEdinburgh. I am starting my second year in Cognitive Science and am obsessed with creating and understanding arts. I enjoy reading in my free time and have always loved to write. Tolkien is my idol, and a favourite pastime is watching drama films and sipping tea.

A favourite TED talk of mine is "Design at the Intersection of Technology and Biology" by Neri Oxman. I appreciate interdisciplinarity and aspire to use my various interests to my advantage similarly to her!

♦️Milo Campbell: I'm Milo, the Head of Operations and Production of TEDxUniversityofEdinburgh. I'm going to be starting my second year of a degree in Linguistics. In my spare time, I like trying to improve my Japanese, listening to Nick Drake, and learning guitar.

My favourite TED talk is "How do you explain consciousness?" by David Chalmers.

♦️Amalia Bajanaru: Hi! I’m Amalia, the Head of Marketing and Communications within the society. I am starting my second year studying Psychology and Linguistics. When I don’t waste too much time overthinking, I like to listen to music and find new ways to express myself artistically - from playing instruments to painting and crocheting, you name it.

A talk I’d recommend to everyone is “A guide to believing in yourself (but for real this time)” by Catherine Reitman. It spoke to me on a personal level and encouraged me to strive for authenticity.

I certainly have many of those, do you? That’s why we came up with a little thinking experiment for you.

♦️Frederike Behr: Hi! I'm Fredi, Co-Founder, and Co-President of the TEDxUniversityofEdinburgh! I’m a second-year student in Linguistics and Japanese. My interests lie mostly in drinking coffee, reading profound literature (smut), playing open-world games, and listening to music.

A TED talk I've recently discovered is “Could an Orca give a Ted Talk?” (The answer is “maybe”) by Karen Bakker on bioacoustics!

♦️Charlie Myszkowski: Hello! My name is Charlie, and I am the Co-President of TEDxUniversityofEdinburgh. I am a second-year Cognitive Science student and spend my free time tinkering with computers, hanging out with friends, and the *occasional* dabble in musical theatre!

I’d highly recommend “The enchanting music of sign language” by Christine Sun Kim. It’s an incredible TED talk about the similarities between American Sign Language and music and it is a MUST watch.

♦️Elia Muller: I’m Elia, the Co-Founder and Secretary of the society 🙂 I’m entering my second year of a degree in Psychology and Linguistics and in my increasingly limited free time I like crocheting my life away (I recently made a crochet shirt!), petting cats and taking introspection many steps too far…

My favourite TED talk (and one of the first I ever watched) is Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s talk: “We should all be feminists”.

♦️Jason Yuki Gunn: I’m Jason, the Treasurer of TEDxUniversityofEdinburgh. I am a first year Earth Sciences student and I love researching and talking about trains, busses, and logistics systems.

One TED talk I’d recommend is “Tackling climate change with socially responsible innovation” by Francesco Lapenta.
